Professional Standards
Sergeant Bill Mann

In order to keep the Hastings Police Department a professional agency, responsible to its public, the Office of Professional Standards was created.

* Internal Affairs - Implemented in 1996 was a comprehensive policy concerning the handling of complaints against police personnel. This policy is necessary to ensure public confidence in their police department, while protecting the rights of those investigated. The internal affairs procedure is designed to provide a systematic, objective, thorough, and impartial investigation which will be carefully documented. He is responsible for ensuring adherence to this internal affairs procedure.

*Evidence - The integrity of evidence and the "Chain of Custody" is very important when presenting a case in court.

* Media Relations - The public's right to know what crime and police-related incidents are occurring in the community and the police department's efforts toward those incidents is paramount. To ensure the efficient flow of information between the police department and the public, an information officer was established. Daily media reports are prepared and faxed to all area media organizations.   Weekly Report Summaries are available online.
