Parking Enforcement

Effective parking control is important to many segments of Hastings. The business community, especially in the downtown area, needs available parking spots for the convenience of its customers. Residents view the existence of abandoned vehicles in their neighborhoods as a hazard and an eyesore. Handicapped parking stalls must be designated and used in accordance with the law. During 1996, the police department established a hotline designed to give citizens quicker service concerning suspected abandoned vehicles and parking problems. The number is 461-2388 and can be called 24 hours a day.  You can also report abandoned vehicles using this form.

Compliance to parking regulations is obtained primarily through the issuance of parking tickets and towing of vehicles. The police department also strives for compliance through public awareness and education.  Community Service Officers are assigned the duty of enforcing parking regulations, however, all sworn personnel are also responsible for parking enforcement.

There are a number of restrictions on parking included in the Hastings City Code.   Some of the problems the Police Department commonly encounters are:

  • Parking in handicapped stalls.  (15-403.01)  $100 fine.  $100-300 fine and can be towed if enforced under state statute (NRS 18-1,741.01)
  • Parking in excess of posted time limits downtown.  (15-405)  $3 fine.
  • Parking too far from curb:  Over 6" from curb downtown, 12" elsewhere.   (15-406)  $3 fine.
  • Parking less than 4 feet from a private driveway.  (15-406)  $3 fine.
  • Parking in alleys.  (Can park up to 1/2 hour for loading/unloading.)  (15-407)   $3 fine.
  • Parking trucks over 20 feet long on city streets.  (15-408)  $3 fine and can be towed.
  • Parking on city street for over 72 hours.  (15-412)  $3 fine and can be towed.
  • Unlicensed vehicles left on street.  (All vehicles on public streets must be licensed or in transit, even if parked.)  (15-415)  $3 fine and can be towed.
  • Parking less than 15 feet from a fire hydrant.  (15-416)  $3 fine and can be towed.
  • Parking across sidewalks.  (15-417)  $3 fine.
  • Parking on terraces.  (15-417)  $3 fine and can be towed.
  • Parking across alley entrances.  (15-419)  $3 fine and can be towed.
  • Vehicles parked with the left side to curb (except on one-way streets).  (15-421)   $3 fine.
  • Vehicles parked in designated fire lanes for ANY length of time.  (13-108)   $10 fine.
  • Parking on a snow route during designated snow emergencies.  (15-504)  $15 fine and can be towed.

If a fine is not paid within 10 days, the fine increases.  $3 fines become $10, $15 fines become $30, and $100 fines become $125.  In addition, vehicles with accumulated tickets can be towed.

You can report abandoned vehicles by calling 402/461-2388 or by using this form.   Abandoned vehicle complaints on private property will be referred to the City Health Department.
