Employment Information

The Hastings Police Department is looking for goal-oriented candidates with integrity, strong character, ethics and morality. We provide great career opportunities for men and women who wish to pursue a proud, challenging, rewarding and stable career as a professional police officer.

Minimum Requirements

  • 21 years of age
  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Pass the T.A.B.E.

(Test of Adult Basic Education)

  • Read and write the English language
  • Good driving record
  • Good moral character
  • Good communication skills
  • Good personal history

Employment Process

Police Officers are selected from an eligibility list.

This list is developed annually, ranking the candidates in the order of their test results. Military veterans may elect to receive veteran preference points.

Testing

  • Complete the preliminary employment application
  • Written examination
  • Oral Interview Panel

Successful candidates are ranked on the eligibility list in order of their scores.

Upon offer of employment, the candidate must successfully complete:

  • Extensive employment application
  • Extensive background investigation
  • Psychological Examination
  • Polygraph Examination
  • Physical Agility Test
  • Physical examination

The candidates will be sent to Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Academy for Basic Training within one year of appointment. The candidate receives his/her salary during this training. The candidate is required to successfully complete Basic Training.

The candidate's probationary status is completed upon six months after certification as a police officer.

Compensation and Benefits

Hastings Police Officers are represented by the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge #9. The FOP negotiates with the City of Hastings for Wages, Fringe Benefits and Working Conditions. Wages are adjusted October 1st.

The Hastings Police Department is composed of 39 police officers, 20 civilians and 4 reserve police officers. These dedicated professionals provide police services to our community of 24,000 residents.

Our mission is "to pursue excellence by working in concert through effective partnerships with our diverse community to improve the quality of life which provides a safe and clean environment for all of our citizens and visitors."

The department is dedicated to the philosophy of Community Oriented Policing. COP decentralizes the decision-making process within the organization and works in partnership with the community.

We believe in the police generalist concept. Personnel are assigned to special assignments on a 5-year basis. This allows everyone an opportunity to experience various assignments within the organization.
