School Safety Teams

In an effort to improve the safety of school students in Hastings, the Hastings Police Department has developed School Safety Teams.

These teams represent a unique partnership between school officials and police. Police involvement in the schools, actively deters risk behaviors and builds positive relationships with students. Through the team efforts, young people are provided the opportunity to lead productive lives free from crime and violence.

Officers are assigned to each school and work closely with the school’s safety team to review the safety plan for each school. The school safety officer recommends prevention strategies to proactively prepare the school for both natural and man-made critical incidents.

The school safety officer makes periodic visits with the students in informal settings such as lunchrooms and playgrounds, to open lines of communication and foster positive interaction between young children and police officers.

School safety officers also provide speed zone enforcement during assembly and dismissal hours and follow up on traffic safety needs and complaints with all elementary schools.
